During May 2015 schools will receive three School Journals – one at each of the levels 2, 3, and 4.
Highlights include Chris Szekely’s first School Journal story “Jump!” and poet Selina Powell’s “Jump”, both of which are in the level 2 journal and are thematically related – overcoming fear. The article about unicycles, “Just One Wheel”, adds a third perspective to the theme.
Look out also for the stunning photographs in “Underground Explorers”, an article in the level 4 journal that follows a group of cavers in the South Island’s Bulmer Cavern. There’s also a poem by the Auckland-based performer Selina Tusitala Marsh and stories by Bernard Beckett, Sarah Penwarden and more.
Among other items, the level 3 journal contains three pieces (a story, poem, and article) that explore New Zealand’s goldmining past, paying particular attention to the immigrants’ experience. This is a great starting place for schools to investigate the history of their own communities.
