Audio files

The School Journal supports students in years 4−8 to develop the knowledge and skills required to meet the reading demands of all the curriculum areas. Since 1907, the School Journal has delivered New Zealand content to motivate, excite, and engage students across the curriculum.
Since 2014, the School Journals are available in digital form as well as print, giving you more ways to use these resources with your students.

A grand tradition continues: read more about the the history of the School Journal in the Education Gazette article online.

Looking for our latest resources?

An online catalogue has been created for Instructional Series.

You'll find Teacher support materials (TSM), audio files and digital copies of the text where available.

Two items from each Level 2 School Journal are produced as audio versions. Audio versions of School Journal items are designed to:

  • help to build students’ confidence and fluency (repeated reading and listening to texts is a powerful way of improving students’ fluency and comprehension)
  • provide scaffolding and support for students who are reading below their expected levels
  • provide material that teachers can use to help students meet achievement objectives within the Listening, Reading, and Viewing strand of English in The New Zealand Curriculum
  • provide excellent reading models, using authentic New Zealand voices from a range of cultural backgrounds.

Embedded support for audio

In 2012, one School Journal item was recorded with embedded support as part of a pilot project.

The embedded support in the audio version for this non-fiction text is designed to assist students to use visual features, such as photographs and diagrams, to help them make meaning of the text.

The aim of including embedded support in audio is to help students to use the strategies highlighted in this audio file independently when they read other non-fiction texts.

The use of an audio file with embedded support is not intended to replace a guided reading lesson. Teachers could use the MP3 file either before or after guided reading sessions to introduce or reinforce strategies.

Ways to use these MP3 files in the classroom

  • Download the MP3 file and play it through your computer speakers.
  • Convert the MP3 files into CD files and create your own audio CDs.
  • Load MP3 files into portable players.

Audio content is copyright the named authors in the recordings.

Audio recordings are copyright Crown.

A CD was distributed to schools in July 2012 containing:

  • eight Level 2 School Journal items
  • two 2012 stories from School Journal Story Library Years 5–6
  • two 2012 stories from School Journal Story Library Years 7–8.

From July 2012, the audio versions will be available only as MP3 files.
