General readings

The following resources are intended to provide research and information on assessment theory and practice.

Ministry of Education Position Paper: Assessment: Published on Wednesday September 29, 2010. The Ministry of Education has produced a position paper which outlines its vision for assessment. This is the first formal statement of position on assessment since the National Assessment Strategy in 1999. This 2010 paper describes what the assessment landscape should look like if assessment is to be used effectively to promote system-wide improvement within, and across, all layers of the schooling system. The paper, supported by national and international research including the 2009 DANZ report, places assessment firmly at the heart of effective teaching and learning. Quality Teaching for Diverse Students in Schooling: Best Evidence Synthesis
This report investigates research-based evidence linked to student outcomes to discuss what constitutes effective teaching for diverse groups of learners.

Specific readings on Literacy

An Approach to Factual Writing: this article suggests one way of categorising types of factual writing and introduces a teaching strategy which can develop students' awareness of the structural and language features of a number of factual genres. Levels 1 to 8.
An evaluation of the use and integration of readymade commercial literacy packages into classroom programmes: This research identifies effective teacher practice for integrating commercially-produced readymade learning materials into classrooms to meet student learning needs. The research focused on practice with respect to literacy packages but the findings have resonance for other curriculum areas.
Critical Analysis: this paper explores writing critical analyses to help increase a reader's understanding of a book, a film or an essay. It provides an outline for writing the analysis. Levels 1 to 8.

Guidelines for integrating readymade commercial packages into teaching programmes: An evidence-based approach: These guidelines are based on research published in An evaluation of the use and integration of readymade commercial literacy packages into classroom programmes.

Lifelong Literacy: The Integration of Key Competencies and Reading: This NZCER report details research that explored how the key competencies might be integrated with the teaching of reading in the middle years of primary (years 3–6).

Literacy teaching and learning in e-Learning contexts: This report presents the findings of a research project on literacy teaching and learning in e-Learning contexts carried out by CORE Education and the New Zealand Council for Educational Research (NZCER) for the Ministry of Education in 2009.

A small study from Canterbury University reveals that a short and intensive period of classroom phonological awareness instruction can raise the literacy profiles of typically developing and at-risk readers. It is important to acknowledge that these results are based on a small sample size which may limit generalization of results. Find out more about the study.
