Literacy Online. Every child literate - a shared responsibility.

Making connections

Reading and writing are just as closely connected as listening and speaking in oral language or viewing and presenting in visual language.

Teachers need to plan for and continually make explicit the connections between reading and writing so that students understand and notice that what they are learning in reading is supporting their writing and vice versa.

Key resources

  • Effective Literacy Practice in Years 1–4 and Effective Literacy Practice in Years 5–8: the section Developing awareness as a reader and writer in Chapter 2 outlines the many kinds of literacy-related awareness students need to develop as readers and writers.
  • Change Over Time In Children’s Literacy Development: the chapter 'Extra power from writing in early literacy interventions' describes how early writing influences early reading.
