English Units: NCEA Level 1

These revised teaching and learning sequences/units for NCEA Level 1 provide models that can help you, as you plan to support learners to make progress and meet the requirements of the New Zealand Curriculum.

  • Out of their comfort zones - This activity is designed to help students explore ideas linked to a central theme in a range of short texts. From there, students write about the situations facing the central characters in these texts and how the characters deal with the challenges or issues they face.
  • Reporting your research - In this activity, students build their understandings about how to structure and present their research conclusions based on information gathered in their inquiries. There is also a focus on using appropriate language features for a written report.
  • Tomorrow when the war began - Students study several aspects of the novel Tomorrow When the War Began including plot, setting, character, theme and style, then write about one selected aspect.
  • What's on your mind - This activity scaffolds the learning of Information Literacy skills and moves students through a guided inquiry process, modelling the way that they can use information to create new knowledge. Students will be assessed against AS 90853.
  • Who's telling the story - This activity focuses on teaching students about how and why authors use different narrative perspectives in their texts. It also models how they can explain the narrative perspective connection across texts. Students will be assessed against AS 90852.
  • Worth reading - In this activity, students read self selected [and teacher approved] extended texts, then plan and write about responses to ideas, issues or themes within their texts.
  • Write all about It - After exploring the features of news journalism and several other newspaper aspects, students develop news stories and opinion pieces for a collaborative print or online publication.
  • Writing for publication
  • Yes...but - This activity focuses on teaching students how to structure and develop pieces of writing exploring various points of view on an issue. Students then write about self selected issues.
