Learning inquiry: Evaluate your students' learning and engagement

Impact of changed practices

What happened as a result of the teaching, and what are the implications for future teaching? In this learning inquiry, the teacher investigates the success of the teaching in terms of the prioritised outcomes, using a range of assessment approaches. They do this both while learning activities are in progress and also as longer-term sequences or units of work come to an end. They then analyse and interpret the information to consider what they should do next.

Key questions

  • Did your students demonstrate understanding of learning outcomes? Are there particular groups of students whose needs are not being met?
  • Which texts/topics/tasks/activities did students engage with?
  • Did all students complete all assessments?
  • Were there any issues around absenteeism at any particular point during the programme?
  • What are the implications for our future planning?

Why are these questions important?

In a learning inquiry, you investigate the success of the teaching in terms of the prioritised outcomes, using a range of assessment approaches. You can do this while learning activities are in progress and also as longer-term sequences or units of work come to an end. You then analyse and interpret the information to consider what the students should do next.

Student engagement can be tricky to evaluate. You may use a second teacher observing lessons, or ask students to conduct lesson, unit or year programme evaluations or find other ways to capture student voice. Whatever way(s) you choose, it is important that all of your students can respond in a safe and honest manner.
