Kelly, a year 5 and 6 teacher, designed a writing task for her students as part of a broader social studies unit. In this case study, she discusses how she differentiates between writing that meets the demands of the curriculum at year 5 and at year 6.

Kelly uses the National Standards and the Literacy Learning Progressions to identify the specific characteristics she expects to see in her students’ writing. She describes the knowledge and skills they will bring to the task. The expected differences between year 5 and year 6 writing are also outlined.
