Literacy Online. Every child literate - a shared responsibility.
Ministry of Education.

Kelly, a year 5 and 6 teacher, designed a writing task for her students as part of a broader social studies unit. In this case study, she discusses how she differentiates between writing that meets the demands of the curriculum at year 5 and at year 6.

The students enjoy telling stories. Kelly leveraged on this interest when she designed the writing task. She also made links to students’ prior experiences of moving to a new place throughout the learning.

Kelly works to develop strong relationships with her students by:

  • setting high expectations
  • providing precise feedback and feed-forward
  • using an integrated approach to make connections across learning situations
  • encouraging collaborative teaching and learning
  • making learning fun.

Kelly used recent assessment information to guide her when she designed the writing task. She noticed that the students:

  • weren’t transferring the detail they use in oral language to their writing
  • needed to make more precise language choices in their written language
  • did not demonstrate understanding of the use of complex punctuation.
