Martin’s year 7 and 8 students are taking part in the NIWA science fair. In this case study, Martin discusses how the learning context provides several authentic writing tasks, including the development of a reflective journal. He describes how he differentiates between writing that meets the demands of the curriculum at year 7 and at year 8.

Martin’s students are developing the skills for inquiry learning through their own investigations in a variety of contexts. He supports his students to express and explore their ideas in depth.

A recent asTTle assessment with a narrative focus showed a need for students to develop content and ideas. Generally the complexity of ideas and information that the students can access, interpret, and discuss through reading is at a higher level than those they portray and express in writing. Martin saw this science investigation as an opportunity to support the students in their selection and use of relevant content and ideas.
